Dig up and search out the past in Chichester

Selsey Bill, West Sussex, was recently announced the UK's top beach for beachcombing by "cottages4you"

Selsey, the most southerly point in West Sussex, is a lovely seaside town offering not only superb beaches but also wonderful seafood, including fresh local fish ‘n' chips and famed Selsey crab. You can also enjoy some excellent sea fishing opportunities. There is plenty of history to take in too and a walk around the town will bring you to a number of spots where there are "blue plaques" commemorating vital points in history including links with the D-Day landings.

Unveiled by Miranda Krestovnikoff, TV presenter and author of 'Best British Beaches', the top ten list of beachcombing beaches in the UK has been compiled in partnership with the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), the charity for UK seas and wildlife. It is based on a number of points including reports received and geographical features, such as rock pools, which make beachcombing more successful. cottages4you also asked for nominations from holidaymakers hitting the nation's coastline this summer and encouraged them to report their most unusual findings.

Beachcombing involves searching the beach for washed-up items and it is the perfect family pastime - and budget happy too as it's free and you never know what you mind come across!
