Midhurst & Petworth Market Towns
Magnificent Sussex countryside and breathtaking scenery serves as a rural backdrop to the pretty market towns of Midhurst and Petworth. Midhurst sits on the doorstep of the South Downs. It is an ideal base for enjoying year round country pursuits from walking or cycling to riding or angling. Relax and enjoy world famous polo at nearby Cowdray Park with its prestigious annual Gold Cup. Whilst the recently repaired ruins of the grand Tudor Cowdray House and its Walled Garden are not to be missed.
Within Midhurst town itself, Georgian architecture and old half-timbered buildings sit next to stylish boutiques and fashionable restaurants. These fine 17th and 18th century buildings served as the setting for past resident HG Wells many books, including his best-known novel ‘The invisible Man’.
Petworth or rather ‘Peteorde’ as it was named in the Domesday Book is a picturesque town full of character and brimming with old world charm. Wander through the cobbled lanes, admire the Georgian architecture and stop to browse in the many antique shops. Standing on the edge of the town is Petworth House with its extensive Deer Park designed by Capability Brown. Built in 1309 and completed in 1696, this National Trust gem is crammed with paintings by Turner, Rembrandt and Reynolds.
